Halifax DJ Company: Behind True North

From disc jockey in Halifax for weddings & corporate parties and special events, to MC of some of the most high profile entertainment events in the Maritimes, people often wonder what significance lies behind the name "True North". There is the obvious, but the inspiration behind our name is a combination of fortunate events.

Global Influence:

Owner Scott Rideout spent several years travelling the world via luxury cruise liners. It marvelled him that, wherever he was, whatever culture he was exposed to, people seemingly were intrigued about Canadians and their way of life. “No matter where I was, reaction to the fact that I was Canadian was always welcomed positively. There is a great sense of pride when people who know nothing about you automatically assume you are a good person and welcomed with open arms. Many before me, including my Grandfather, laid this path so that I can benefit. Grateful is an understatement, It’s our job to live up to this expectation.”

True North – Strong and Free always rang in Scott’s head.

Caribbean Influence:

On a trip to St. Maarten, in the Caribbean, Scott had the priviledge of climbing aboard & sailing a 12 Meter racing yacht that raced in the acclaimed America’s Cup – the name of the yacht you ask? True North IV.

“What amazed me was that the boat was slick and up to the challenge of whatever was thrown at it. Even better was the fact that the boat had embodied what sets us apart…Something I never realized you could do with a boat! The flag was attached by a hockey stick, the Maple Leaf apparent in all its glory. The people who crewed with me were all Canadian from across the country. After the race, in the middle of the Caribbean blue sea, we broke out the beer…Not just any beer, frosty cold Labatt’s Blue. This is how life is meant to be!”

Local influence:

Scott & his wife Chez decided it was time to return home, back to the Maritimes with a new sense of what it is to be a Maritimer. When founding the company, finding a name that was meaningful and encapsulated the global experiences with a local connotation was tricky - but not hard to find! “In my head, it was obvious. Yes we are the Great White North, yes we come from one of the nicest places on the planet and live by the sea, yes we cultivate proud, hard working citizens and yes we have a sense of humour about it.”

Hence the name – True North DJs.
